The first muslin finished was on the small order (I'd started out with a knit template for a woven top so I knew I'd run into some problems there...just wanted to know how far off it'd be before resizing). After making the alterations I made a 2nd muslin which turned out great. It was made for a woven lace with very little stretch...I drafted it so there would be buttons at the hem band for ease in getting it on and off.
Then for the fun part...hunting down fabric! We quickly ran into trouble there as it seems most of the lace you'll find in the reg. shops were created for tablecloths- ugh. I really don't want to waste all my time I've put into a garment for it to turn out looking like a doily. After some searching around online (oh yeah! I found some I liked too...only they were like, $50/yd!). Ebay came to the rescue with a pretty crocheted lace (5yds for just about $15...could you do better??) Enough for another project...or two :) At any rate, once the fabric was in my hands I realized that I'd have a bit more trouble with the pattern due to the fabric being quite stretchy.
So I put it away for awhile :)
Until I realized it would sew itself together. I have a running joke with my sister that she can have all the clothes she wants from me...but assembly is required ;)
So the dirty work began. I eliminated the buttons as the stretch of the fabric would allow her to get in and out of it with no trouble. Other than assembly not much was changed until I got to the bands. I attached the first arm band and tried it on...it weighed the entire sleeve down and was probably twice as big after being stretched to fit the sleeve...it wouldn't recover. Should have known! Trimmed that off and decided to go ahead with the hem band, using clear elastic in the seam allowance (btw-all seams are french, so the elastic is completely enclosed and hidden). That worked out rather well and I decided to do the same with the arms bands...after fitting it once more before this though we decided to hack of a whole 6.5" from the sleeves! They just looked rather sad and droopy in this fabric...not at all like the sleeves we'd imagined in a stiff lace (this is definitely not a stiff fabric). But it worked out rather well in this length and the elastic gives some support to the top and keeps it in place.
My biggest disappointment in finishing this is the neckline...again due to the stretch of this fabric. The last muslin fell right at the tips of her shoulder, but still 'just' on top of her shoulders...it was custom fit after all! Well this knit version as you will see fits right around her shoulders. The Carlos Miele top is worn off the shoulder as well, but I still would have liked this top to hit above so that if she wanted to wear it up she could without it falling down now and again. If I were to do it over for this sort of fabric I would redraft the collar piece in at least an inch on both sides and possibly up a half inch. But really, it works out well enough and I'm quite proud of my drafting skills I've gained in this project! Not bad for starting out :)
Oh and if you've looked up the orig. top and saw the beading...we decided on no trim for this collar as the crocheted lace really stands out on it's own. I think beading would look silly on this sort of fabric...which turned out good for me :D
Sorry to bore all of you not interested in the mundane details of construction but I like to give tips and hints to those who are as well as a record for myself :)
Next is quickie top I did from the first muslin of the lace shirt in a thin jersey knit...kinda funny how sometimes those quick projects turn out to be favorites! Really love the look of this top and the fabric feels so soft! I planned on this for myself...but I really hate pastels on me...dunno why I bothered! I have another fabric though for me which will work better and will make it soon, now that I'm done with these projects! The neck turned out HUGE (knew that!) but I decided to gather it up with elastic and it turned out really well. I left the sleeves unhemmed as it's a casual shirt and won't ravel anyway...and gathered the hem into a band to reign in the fullness at the hips. (Like my new photoshop skillz?)

Last is a top I made playing around with a tshirt pattern and slinky-knit (I made undies for myself out of the same fabric and love them! sorry- no pics :P). It's alright, but not totally what I'd envisioned...I may have another go at it someday but I would like to get on with some other projects first. I gave it to Cassie as I knew I'd never really wear it. She likes it and it goes with a cardigan well enough with the tie pulled in closer to the neck. I feel bad posting these pics of her as they're not that flattering...but this dumb slinky knit is CRAP to photograph! You may scroll back to the green top to remind yourself what she really looks like, lol :)

I still have a few more projects I haven't posted and will put those up soon. For now I'm off...going to try and figure out from my pattern book how to draft a raglan sleeve from a reg. shirt pattern...until then!
